Press Release – The first edition of ‘VerdeOlympics’ in Cabo Verde

PRESS RELEASE

Praia, Cabo Verde · Wednesday, 06 April 2016

SportImpact and the Cabo Verde Olympic Committee
organized on Saturday, April 2, in Assomada,

the pilot edition of ‘VerdeOlympics’

At the 1st edition of ‘VerdeOlympics’ over 450 children and youngsters in Assomada experienced 15 different sports. The pilot was also a celebration of the International Day of Sport for Peace and Development.

This event was covered by Cabo Verde national television (RTC). Press here to see the video.

The event was co-organized with 38 participants of a five-day workshop at the Assomada SOS Children’s Villages, on “Guide for Organizing Sport Events”. During the workshop the participants were stimulated by SportImpact facilitators to empower themselves to pursue their projects and dreams instead of just waiting for external support.  Inspired by Peace and Sport’s Adapted Sport Manual, they built sport equipment for the event from local materials and recycled garbage, overcoming the lack of official (and expensive) equipment.

SportImpact thanks in particular Olympic Solidarity for financial support, the Assomada SOS Children’s Villages for providing logistical support and a dedicated focal point, General Directorate for Sport for establishing key contacts and Peace and Sport for creating and sharing the Adapted Sport Manual. For this event SportImpact appreciates the support from all co-organizers and volunteers from Santiago Norte Volleyball Association, Santiago Norte Karate Association, Santiago Norte Handball Association, Santiago Norte Capoeira Association, Assomada City Hall, Youth Centre of Assomada, Cabo Verde Institute for Children and Adolescents, local schools, among others.
