Press release – The last edition of ‘Sport for Life’, in Same

PRESS RELEASE

Dili, Timor-Leste · Wednesday, 10 December 2015

SportImpact organized on Saturday, December 5, in Same,
the 13
th  and last edition  of ‘Sport for Life’

About the future of SportImpact

SportImpact took ‘Sport for Life’ to all 13 Timor-Leste municipalities in 2015. According to SportImpact’s Project Manager, João Girão, “We are proud of having covered the whole country with such a small team and limited budget. We would like to thank everyone for their contributions, in particular UNESCO, Sport Confederation of Timor-Leste, World Vision, ChildFund, One World Play Project, national federations and their associations, especially Athletics, and Youth Centres in each municipality. A special thanks to the hundreds of young participants around Timor-Leste, who participated enthusiastically and made this possible.”

Unfortunately, due to severe lack of funding SportImpact cannot commit to replicate this initiative in 2016 in order to ensure a legacy of continued sport practice and human development through local sport clubs and associations. However, according to João Girão, “due to our resilience, we could avoid the complete shutdown of the program in Timor-Leste, by designing a plan with no international staff, no trips to municipalities, and other measures.”

SportImpact is actively looking for partners and financial support for the Timor-Leste project.

About the event in Same

At the 13th edition of ‘Sport for Life’ hundreds of children and youngsters in Same experienced 10 different sports.

This event was covered by Timor-Leste national television (RTTL). The news were broadcasted on national television on Wednesday 09/Dec at 8 p.m. (Timor-Leste time)

The event was co-organized with 42 participants of a five-day workshop at the Same Youth Center on “Guide for Organizing Sport Events”. During the workshop the participants were stimulated by SportImpact facilitators to empower themselves to pursue their projects and dreams instead of just waiting for external support. Inspired by Peace and Sport’s Adapted Sport Manual, they built sport equipment for the event from local materials and recycled garbage, overcoming the lack of official (and expensive) equipment.

The Timor-Leste Athletics Federation had a special participation, bringing several internationally certified coaches to facilitate ‘Kids Athletics‘ – a series of games and exercises – for fun but also talent identification – including sprints, jumps, throws and different drills.

SportImpact thanks in particular UNESCO for financial support to seven municipalities, MOVE – Catholic University of Portugal for committed volunteers, Peace and Sport for creating and sharing the Adapted Sport Manual, and the One World Play Project, for ‘indestructible’ footballs through ChildFund. For this event SportImpact appreciates the support from all co-organizers and volunteers from Timor-Leste Volleyball Federation, Timor-Leste Football Federation, Timor-Leste Sport Confederation, Timor-Leste National Youth Council, Youth Centre of Same, local schools, among others.
