PRESS RELEASE

Dili, Timor-Leste · Friday, 29 July 2016

SportImpact organized the first ever ‘Laser Shooting’ and ‘Laser Run’
in Timor-Leste, in Dili on July 16th

As part of the recent ‘Sport for Life Youth Leadership Camp’ and sport event, and with special support from the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM), SportImpact organized in Dili, Timor-Leste, for the first time ever in the country, a Laser Shooting and Laser Run (shooting + running) session.

The activities took place at Jardin de Borja, in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, during a multi-sport event including a dozen of other sports, all played non-competitively. Over 400 people took part in the event, mostly school boys and girls of ages 10-15.

Laser Shooting was a particularly huge success, with a crowd of kids queueing continuously for long hours and anxiously asking at the end when they could practice again. A couple of the best shooters were invited to try a short Laser Run, and the first ever Timorese Laser Run winner became the most frequent visitor to the shooting range during the rest of the activity.

In this first experiment, facilitators’ focus was on enforcing safety and peaceful rules, transmitting positive values associated with this safe and ecological shooting discipline, where no bullets are shot. Given the young age of many participants, they were allowed to use the laser pistols in less orthodox ways (e.g., both hands, closer to the body, etc.).

SportImpact will continue including Laser Shooting and Laser Run in future events, and is looking for local partners who may want to adopt Laser Run as part of their disciplines (e.g., the Timor-Leste Athletics Federation and/or the Timor-Leste Shooting Federation).

SportImpact appreciates the generous support from the International Modern Pentathlon Union, who offered the pair of laser pistols and targets that enabled this pilot initiative.
